Global.com Post Mortem
Contributed by Ryan on Sunday November 22, @10:48PM
from the stuff-to-grok dept.
TechWeb takes a look at why Global.com failed and what they probably could have done to survive. They suggest that they blew all of their Venture Capital on pointless employee perks, such as a heated swimming pool. Another explanation is that the company wasted all of their money on the lamest Super Bowl commercial ever produced. I realized as I read this that I never once bought anything from Global.com. Oh well.

Contributed by Mike on Sunday November 22, @11:44PM
from the stuff-to-read dept.
Analysts are worried about NetHerald.Com, which is not only in financial trouble but has been acting very strange lately. Instead of laying off employees that they don't need, they've increased their workforce by 46% even though in a few months they'll start bouncing payroll checks. According to some, the company is doomed because it had a business plan written on a napkin. So what gives?

Modern Art Beowulf Cluster
Contributed by Ryan on Monday November 23, @12:23AM
from the i-should-have-majored-in-art dept.
fDisewe writes, "A bored grad student at CourtneyCity State University created a modern art sculpture in the campus courtyard made entirely out of old 486 computers. The cool part is that this Rube Goldberg-like contraption actually works -- part of it is a fully functional Beowulf cluster! The Computer Science Club's website is served by the cluster, which is nicknamed Geekzilla." I wish they had cool stuff like that at my college.
