Miscellaneous Slashdot Notes
Slashdot.orgPosted by CmdrTaco on Sunday November 22, @11:28PM
from the stuff-to-grok dept.
I finally found some time to do a little perl hacking on the Slashdot codebase. Like usual, I've probably broken something, but I'll leave it to you guys to find the bugs (and hopefully submits diffs :-)). Some of the changes include tweaks to the moderation code (if you're a moderator or a moderator-wannabee, please click below for full details), subliminal advertising embedded in the html source code (maybe I shouldn't mention that), and an anti-spam system to thwart user agents with names like 'EmailCollector' and 'SpamMaker'. Click the more link for details...

Feature: The Rise Of Cyber Revolution
TechnologyPosted by JonKatz on Sunday November 22, @11:42PM
from the Rambling-On-About-Nothing dept.
Over two decades ago, the concept of the Cyber Revolution was one of the most insightful ideas coming from Usenet. Now everybody is a little more wiser, and less idealistic. Still, could the idea come back?

Attack of the Killer Backhoe
NewsPosted by Hemos on Monday November 23, @12:50AM
from the nerds-panic-nationwide dept.
Net access was severaly disrupted earlier today by an errant backhoe that accidentally cut two major net backbone cables near Palo Alto, California. Preliminary reports indicate that as much as 48% of all US-based websites were offline for as many as three hours. The backhoe operator, "Bubba" Sebring, says that he "pulled the wrong lever". A full investigation by the FCC will commence as soon as the department receives sufficient funding.

United StatesPosted by Cliff on Sunday November 22, @11:16PM
from the another-tough-question dept.
Lindsay Sayre writes, " I've been shopping for a new Software Modem, but most everything only works with Windows. The only exception is the IBM 204I, but it's way more than I can afford. Does anybody know of any other models that do work with Linux?"

    Book Reviews

Neil Lehtovaara sent in a review of How To Write Programs Compatible With GNOME and KDE, a book that might finally put an end to some of the flame wars.

For the Perl lovers amongst us (I think that's everyone), Salvatore Keller sent us a review of the amazing Perl for Smarties, a great IDG book.

Jesse Berst's new book, Anchored To The Desk: Succeeding As An Online Pundit, is a waste of money according to Midista120.

Python in a Nutshell is a good introductory book for Python novices, although I'll stick with Perl myself.
